W.T. Woodson is ready to accept new challenges
September 22, 2009 - To a certain degree, it's a season of change for the W.T. Woodson Cavaliers. Nevertheless, the Fairfax, VA school's coach expects much to remain the same. "We're moving districts" said Doug Craig, after his team's open gym this morning, one that started at 5:50am. "From the Liberty District, which is more of a half court league, to the Patriot District, which is more up and down (fastbreak oriented)". Some programs would be intimidated by such a stylistic change, but Craig indicated Woodson is not one. "During the nine years I've been here as an assistant or head coach - the latter four years - we've won at least 15 games. It's reasonable to expect us to compete".
Teammates will receive many passes from Max Lennox, who is running lead guard for W.T. Woodson this campaign. Woodson's team's do that, and per Craig it's in large measure due to a skill that's overlooked not only in hoops, but life. "Our kids work really hard at it", he said. Proving that ethos, Craig went on to share "This off-season, our kids (varsity, junior varsity and those interesting in playing) have lifted weights two and a half hours a day, three times a week". Those sessions were attended by 25-30 kids. Add the crack-of-dawn open gyms twice weekly, and the coach's sentiments seem spot on. Having won three consecutive Liberty District crowns, Woodson also is talented, which coupled with precise offensive sets, including plays designed to get players open for shots, makes them a tough out. Following are some of the players that will be central in meeting Craig's expectations; a significant challenge given Woodson's schedule, one that includes not only Patriot District play, but also hosting a tip-off event in early December, playing several Washington Catholic Athletic Conference schools, and traveling to Tidewater for the Ronald Curry Christmas Tournament.
Max Lennox - 6'1", 185 pound senior guard - Having received a scholarship offer from Mount St. Marys and attention from Niagara, Loyola (MD), Bryant, Radford plus Big South, MAAC schools, Lennox, a known recruiting object, will trigger key the Cavailer's attack this season. His jumpshot has improved, which is dangerous for foes. John Schoof - 6'5", 185 pound junior swingman - Schoof is a shooter and slasher, who will also finish over opponents. Harvard, William and Mary, American and Colgate have reportedly offered John, a strong student.
John Schoof shoots, while Andrew Boehling defends. Jaime Donelen - 6'2", 175 pound senior guard - The teams likely sixth man, Donelen provides energy off the bench. DIII schools are evaluating him. Steven Noe - 6'2", 190 pound senior guard - His coach labeled him "a shooter" with Division I ability in that regard. Andrew Boehling - 6'4", 185 pound junior forward - A three capable of playing some four, Boehling came off the pine last year, but is expected to perform this season, as he can shoot, pat and has athleticism. Is the team's X-factor. Jordin Twenhofel - 5'10", 160 junior combo guard - This season Jordin will be a complimentary player, who provides quickness and shooting.
