DeMatha wins the chip, and Mike Starghill has the pics.
March 9, 2009 – Yesterday DeMatha Catholic won a consecutive Washington Catholic Athletic Association title, downing arch-rival Gonzaga 71-52 at American University. The game was suprisingly one-sided, given the two school's penchant for dramatic, hotly contested affairs (they split previously this year). Photojournalist Mike Starghill was on hand to capture the event. To see and/or purchase his work, click here. Not only are photos available, but merchadise is as well.
Tyler Thornton challenges Vic Oladipo (23) and junior forward Mikael Hopkins, who finished with eight points. High score-man was DeMatha's Quinn Cook; the junior guard dropped 30. Senior guard Victor Oladipo joined him in double figures with 12. A trio of seniors paced Gonzaga: Guard Tyler Thornton led the Eagles with 16 points, while fellow backcourt performer Ced Lindsay scored 12. Swingman Malcolm Lemmons contributed 10 points. The victors now stand 29-3, while Gonzaga is 25-7. The teams both will compete in the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament, held March 18-20 in Frostburg, MD.
