Selected Brief Player Evals: Gus Gilchrest – It’s a shame he got called for early fouls, as this 6’9”, 230lb center/forward may just be the best big man in the D.C. area right now. Having worked tremendously on his post moves, quickness, and intensity, Gus is playing like a guy who knows he belongs. To compete against Benedict’s frontline with four fouls for an entire half is also a testament to his court awareness and blossoming understanding of the game.
Gus Gilchrest (left), is sure to make an impact at Va Tech next season. Gregory Echenique – Consider him following in the footsteps of Samuels, so to speak. While not as comfortable filling lanes as Samuels, the 6’9”, 240+ pound center forward does like to mix it up down low – just like Samuels – and boasts great feet and athleticism – just like Samuels. At the NBA Player’s Association Camp this summer, he proved himself an undisputed talent – just like Samuels. Will be highly recruited – just like Samuels. Zach Rosen – New to the Benedict’s program, Hurley indicated the young man is becoming accustomed to playing at that program’s level, consistently. At 6’1” and around 185 points, Rosen boasts some strength to go with his shooting, ball handling, and decision making. Look for him to become more assertive as the season continues. Samardo Samuels – Listed as 6’9” and 245lbs, Samuels is a beast, as he is strong, has balance, good feet, post up skills, an ability to play transition ball, and the knowledge of when to employ what, to help his squad. There is no wonder why he is one of the best frontcourt players in America.
Samardo Samuels, shown here in warm ups, is listing Florida, Georgetown, Louisville, Rutgers, St. John's, UConn, and UNC. Ernest Watson – Showed major heart dealing with the Benedict’s front line, standing 6’7” and weighing less than 200lbs. Has been transitioning out to the small forward, but can attack the rim starting from a back to the basket position. Athletic and quick, can get off the ground quickly. Is developing quite nicely. Jasper Williams – Has no fear, this true combo is crafty (ask the Benedict’s defenders) and smart. Jasper’s athleticism has improved greatly over the last year, and as such, he is capable of taking over games at times, offensively and defensively. His step back three early in the second quarter was a thing of beauty. Stands 6’2”, and weighs around 175lbs.
