Lessons learned in preseason competition.

October 12, 2014 - UP by 20 points in the second half, the Washington Adventist fans who traveled to Prince George's County Community College's, Upper Marlboro, MD gym, had much to cheer about. It seemed as if the Shock would travel back to Takoma Park happy and victorious.

Head coach Xavier Joyner and his PGCC Owls didn't buy the narrative; the home team started to take care of the ball, at times employed full court, trapping pressure and battled back to tie with under ten seconds left.

Donnell Diggs going to the cup.

Then, the drama occurred; PGCC got a stop with under five seconds remaining, sophomore guard Donnell Diggs received the ball around half court, raced to the three point line and rose up for a long ball. He was fouled on the shot, sank his three charity strip attempts, and the Owls and their fans celebrated an 85-82, home court preseason scrimmage win.

For the record MD JUCO and NJCSAA got one against the USCAA.

Joyner took away pros and cons.

"Our guys saw the benefits of continuing to play hard until the horn sounds, no matter how much you are up/down. I'm really proud of their resilience last night" texted the coach this morning. He then pivoted, lamenting "We must improve our defensive rotations".

That's what scrimmages are for. Fans should expect a lot from this year's crew of Owls - Joyner et al could be a force to be reckoned with in Maryland's JUCO ranks.
