August 4, 2014 - The gym at Lamond Recreation Center in Northwest, DC was packed last night, as fans came to witness the i95Ballerz.com Summer League's playoff quarterfinal round. Eight teams came, four went home.

Below are game reports along with a look at specific players.

National Collegiate Prep 52 Cardozo 47

In the evenings only upset, National Collegiate Prep (DC), the playoff's sixth seeded team took out Cardozo (DC), ranked fifth. Cardozo battled back from 17 down to three with less than a minute left, but couldn't get over the hump.

National Collegiate Prep employed a zone, one that was initially effective. Cardozo countered with skip passes and ball sharing, which along with their pressing fueled the near comeback.

Mike Bennett led NCP with 13 points, while Kenneth Ford logged 11 points. Cardozo was led by Kelvin Koonce's 14 points. His teammate Jared Armstrong chipped in 11.

Randall Broddie of Potomac (MD) tries to score over Takoma Academy's Corey Fitzgerald.

Mike Bennett - 6'1", 170 pound junior guard, National Collegiate Prep - A slasher that always attacks, Bennett is also explosive and hustles. More of a straight line driver, he needs to get elusive with his dribbling. Also seemed to turn down open shots to drive, so it's unknown how well he shoots, and from where.

Theodore Roosevelt 36 Blair 33

Theodore Roosevelt (DC), #2 in playoff seeding had to get a Davonta Ray three ball with two seconds left to prevail for #7 Blair (MD). The latter team came to play, and had success against TR's pressure defense.

Ray, who led with 15 points redeemed himself, as he was involved in a turnover with fifteen seconds remaining and TR down 35-33. Julius Cobb scored 10 points for Blair, while also cleaning the glass and being a force down low.

Yashar Joseph - 5'9", 165 pound senior point guard, Blair - A good set up man, Joseph shares the ball and runs a squad. Is heady. Needs to work on his quickness.

Capital Christian 46 Central 36

Overpowered and out-executed early on, Central (MD) was down 27-11 at halftime, yet played better in the second half. Nevertheless first seeded Capital Christian (MD) was able to play its bench in the second stanza versus #7 Central.

Kwame Camon led C.C. with seven points. Dequan Simmons of Central paced the game, scoring 13 points.

Dequan Simmons - 6'2", 170 pound junior guard/forward, Central - A sweet shooting player who tickles the twine from spot ups. Needs to work on scoring off the bounce.

Potomac 48 Takoma Academy 35

Takoma Academy (MD) stayed in contention for the game until late, when Potomac's size and depth finally wore them down. Every TA charge was answered by Potomac (MD).

The guy with the most answers was Randall Broddie, who finished with 25 points for Potomac. Anthony Tate paced TA by dropping 18 points, many times after eluding attempted traps.

Corey Fitzgerald - 6'2", 185 pound junior guard/forward, Takoma Academy - Athletic, Fitzgerald finished and competes on the boards. Has worked on his ball patting and shooting, which needs to continue.

Oakwood and SW Adventist (TX) have shown interest.
