August 21, 2008 – The travails of Gus Gilchrist have been well documented here and elsewhere, including his plans to attend Virginia Tech and subsequent leaving there for the University of Maryland. Presently, Gus is in sunny Florida, preparing to invade the Big East.

Gilchrist's work ethic is well known and respected.

“I’ve been attending classes and working out” shared Gilchrist via telephone early this week, of his activity in Tampa, where he’s set to attend the University of South Florida. Those training sessions, which include informal workouts with the University of South Florida’s Men’s Team, as well as locally-based professionals such as Anthony Parker, Renaldo Balkman, Solomon Jones and the Graham Brothers – Joey and Stevie – have been both taxing and fostered his development.

Gilchrist is currently appealing the NCAA to allow participation in this year’s USF season, an occurrence the 6’9”, 240 pound forward greatly anticipates. Doing so will not only return him to the court after a year long hiatus, but facilitate a reunion with Chris Howard, a USF point guard that performed with Gilchrist at Friendly High School (MD) several years ago. “It’ll be good to play Chris, it’ll be just like old times, except I’m better now” joked Gus.

Terrell Woody, Gilchrist’s mentor and trainer also reached via telephone, is equally bullish about USF: “The coaches have been truthful about everything…I think everything is good. Stan Heath is an excellent coach”.

If Gilchrist’s waiver is not granted, he is prepared to sit out the entire year, though doing so would be a challenge. Based on Woody’s statement “I don’t know why people feel he should be constantly punished”, part of the struggle would be dealing with nay saying observers.
