Many players who participated are being recruited. These are but a snap shot. March 5, 2013 Breonn Hughey – A 5-2” junior point guard, Hughey indicated the likes of VCU and St. Francis (PA) have offered scholarships, while UNC-Charlotte and others are interested. She’s a penetrating point guard that is relentless in doing so.
Must get stronger and become a better shooter for college.
Erin Blaine, Breonn Hughey and Mercedes Suarez all were recognized by the DCIAA for their play this season. Omar ‘Lil’ Benny’ Roberts – As a gutsy point guard capable of hitting the open shoot and driving to the cup, Roberts has been offered by Hawaii and Florida Gulf Coast. Gardner Webb is also interested. Roberts needs to get stronger for college, allowing him to take the bumps he will encounter there. Given his young age, Roberts, a 5’10”, 165 pound senior may attend prep school next year. Finished with 12 points against Roosevelt, and was voted First Team 2012 DCIAA Boys West. Mercedes Suarez – Athletic and standing around 5’11”, Suarez has received attention from Michigan, Boston University, Mansfield and others, as she’s an athletic player with major upside. Her coach at Wilson, Eric White, would like to see her “think the game better”, as well as better her ball handling and shoot more consistently. A junior, Suarez scored 13 points last night, and was named to the First Team 2012 DCIAA Girls West All-League squad.
Omar 'Lil Benny' Roberts can drive, dime and shoot. Kory Cooley – Standing 6’2” and weighing around 170 pounds, Cooley is a guard that can shoot, drive and pass Must get stronger and further embrace the point guard role – or at least more consistently do that – for college. He indicated “UNC Greensboro, Florida Gulf Coast and Georgetown” have expressed varied levels of interest in him. A junior, Cooley will continue to play for the Ivey 2-3 travel team organization. Dropped eight points versus TR. Morgan Smiley – Possibly the best on-ball defender in girls or boys DCIAA competition, Smiley, a 5’8” senior, truly straps up, making life a nightmare for opposing guards. Winston Salem State and Mansfield have both offered her scholarships, and she revealed plans to visit them. Bethune-Cookman and Virginia State are also in the mix. Smiley understands “I have to shoot better” for college. Add that to her excellent defense, solid driving skills plus aggressive play and its fairly obvious Smiley, a student at Anacostia, could have an excellent college career. A First Team 2012 DCIAA Girls East All-League selection. Erin Blaine – Having transferred from Riverdale Baptist this year due to that school’s former coach, Diane Richardson moving on to the college ranks, Blaine has instantly made an impact on HD Woodson’s team, being tabbed First Team 2012 DCIAA Girls East All-League. Has verballed to St. Francis (PA), whom she chose over Hampton, Farleigh Dickinson, and Middle Tennessee State. Is a crafty, smart player who uses brains and shooting skills to impact the game. Must more fully develop her ball handling and improve conditioning for the next level. Scored 17 points against Wilson. Coaches in attenance: Amongst othere, Georgetown (John Thompson III and Kevin Broadus), Delaware (Chris Cheeks) and GW. See Facebook.com/RonBailey19 (albums section) for exclusive photos.
