Former Largo standout is proving himself in college.
A freshman, Colter dropped seven points, three rebounds, and five assists against the Hoyas, work done in 33 minutes of play. His clock total led the Dukes, as did the dimes, while he tied for third in scoring.
Derrick Colter, raising up in the second half against G'Town. During the 2012-2013 season, so far Derrick averaged 12 points and 6.5 assists a game. As a senior at Largo, he dropped 22.5 points each time out last season. For the night, Colter at times displayed a prodigious ability to get around defenders. At others, he did so too much, forcing the action – and generating five turnovers. His coach was not dismayed by Derrick’s up and down play after the game. “We are starting a freshman, in the second game of his career, a local kid, playing against Georgetown” stated Jim Ferry, Duquesne’s coach, when asked about Colter’s play. “How about that night?” Continuing, Ferry noted “He’s inexperienced. The other night, I thought he was dynamic for us. He turned the ball over some tonight. " He’s like that in practice too; he has a good minute and a bad minute. He’s a freshman”. Count Ferry hopeful for and confident in his young charge: “But fast forward this, and I want to see what Derrick Colter is going to be in four years. He’s going to be a pretty good basketball player”. To improve in anything, one must admit where they haven’t functioned as well as to be expected. Colter displayed that tendency in his post game press conference. “Dribble drive pass, real fast; keep moving the ball so the defense cant’ set up” is what he established his team’s offensive focus to be. Did he deviate from that his turnover with 20 seconds to go and the Dukes down five, when he forced the ball to the rim? “Yes, I did so” honestly answered the 6’0 guard. That honesty extended to the overall contest, as Colter opined on it “It was a good game. We played hard. We just couldn’t finish it. We missed a rebound at the end of the game; that’s a 50-50 ball. Coach preaches about that”. Seems as though he’s listening to his coach as well. Things are definitely trending upward for Derrick Colter, yet another DMV guy doing work in college. .
